The World Premiere performance of Benedict Sheehan’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (2018) will showcase a major new work of Orthodox choral music by an American composer. Commissioned in 2015 by the PaTRAM Institute, Sheehan’s Liturgy is among the first complete settings of the Orthodox Liturgy ever to be composed for the English language. The sumptuous a cappella score draws on the rich tradition of Russian Orthodox choral music, but contains echoes of the diverse array of musical traditions that make up the American Church today.

The performance is part of the festivities of St. Tikhon’s Monastery’s 115th Annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage, and it will be held in the visually rich and acoustically stunning atmosphere of St. Stephen’s Pro-Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The Saint Tikhon Choir is made up of some of the finest singers in North America, and its annual Memorial Day weekend concert is fast coming to be recognized as a highlight of the artistic season in the Northeast Pennsylvania region. They will be joined this year by members of the PaTRAM Institute Singers.
